Summer vacation is in full swing, which means I have been taking advantage of the long, lazy days to read to my heart’s content. June was full of inspiring reads, from a novel about a pioneering aviatrix to a memoir about traveling around the world with children in tow. I also finally turned my attention to some books that have been languishing on my nightstand throughout the school year, such as a crackling mystery set in a small Australian farm town and a timely novel…Continue Reading “To Read: June 2017 Book Report”

She had me at malasadas. Vinny and I were sitting at the Big Island Brewhaus in Waimea with a dear friend who now lives in Kona on the Big Island. When we told her about our plans to drive back to Hilo, where we were staying during our visit, she insisted that we stop at TEX Drive In on our back to the hotel, and that we needed to try their apple malasadas.┬áSince I love malasadas, she did not need to campaign too hard on…Continue Reading “To Eat: Malasadas at TEX Drive In”

One of the great things about the neighborhood where Vinny and I live is its proximity to a Maui institution: T. Komoda Store and Bakery. This bakery has been serving locals and visitors alike since 1916. In fact, one of the bakery’s charms is that its interior appears to have changed very little over the last century. Komoda’s location in the heart of Makawao town makes it a place┬áthat is hard for me to resist whenever I’m visiting the shops along Baldwin Avenue. From their…Continue Reading “To Eat: Malasadas at T. Komoda Store and Bakery”

It’s now almost midway through March, and I’m finally getting around to writing about what I read in February, which is oddly appropriate. I had great intentions of reading more in February, but life got in the way (just as I had great intentions of posting this roundup on March 1, but the date snuck up on me and I hadn’t written a word). I thought for sure that I would read more in February: I was traveling abroad, I had a week off from…Continue Reading “To Read: February 2017 Book Report”

This month, I read four very different books in January, but now, after reflecting back on them, I see that they all share one common element: strong women. I also happily stumbled upon the “What Should I Read Next?” podcast from Anne Bogel at Modern Mrs. Darcy, which has given me lots of great titles to add to my reading list. Swing Time by Zadie Smith / Two little girls are drawn together on their first day of dance class, and their friendship fills this…Continue Reading “To Read: January 2017 Book Report”

To Read: December 2016 Book Report

December 2016 proved to be a rich month for thought-provoking reading. I didn’t finish as many books as I thought I would, but I greatly enjoyed the four titles that I did manage to read during the month. I also came close to reaching my goal of reading 40 books for pleasure and professional development this year; I missed my goal by just four books. Here’s to more reading in 2017! But first, a recap of the books I read in December: The Sacred Lies…Continue Reading “To Read: December 2016 Book Report”
